Join the Alberta Citizen Science Community of Practice (CitSci Alberta) to learn about citizen science in Alberta and beyond.

Each Wednesday Webinar will take place from Sept. 25th to Oct. 23rd. Through these webinars, you will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of citizen science on a variety of relevant and timely topics. Then, join us in Edmonton on October 30th as we bring together the citizen science community to learn, engage, network, and explore our collective impact on policy development, decision-making, and public engagement.

Who Should Attend?

This program is geared towards individuals and organizations engaged in, or interested in, citizen science from practitioners, researchers, and environmental managers to educators, project coordinators and volunteers.

1: DIVERSE APPLICATIONS OF CITIZEN SCIENCE WORLDWIDE

Speaker: Prof. Muki Haklay, University College London

Prof Mordechai (Muki) Haklay FAcSS, is a professor of Geographic Information Science at University College London (UCL). He is the co-director of the Extreme Citizen Science group at UCL. He is also the co-founder of Mapping for Change, a social enterprise dedicated to community mapping and citizen science. In addition, is the citizen science team leader at the Learning Planet Institute, Paris. Muki has over 20 years of experience in participatory science activities.

About the Webinar:
Prof. Muki Haklay will share an overview of citizen science in Europe, also highlighting the opportunity for learning in the European Citizen Science Academy that Prof. Haklay is a part of running from the Learning Planet Institute in Paris.

This talk will be followed by an opportunity for questions tailored to how international applications can be adopted in Alberta’s citizen science community.

3: INNOVATION: TRANSFORMATIVE TOOLS

Speaker: Kyle Horner, Birds Canada

Kyle Horner is a lifelong birdwatcher and science communicator based in Guelph, Ontario. As the NatureCounts Engagement Coordinator at Birds Canada, he works to raise awareness and adoption of the NatureCounts data platform, and to help users make the most of this unique resource. Currently he is part of a team developing the State of Canada’s Birds, a new online resource that will make citizen science bird data accessible, understandable, and meaningful to all Canadians.
